Hawaii Information - History
he Hawaiian Islands are very special places, each with unique flora and fauna and, of
course, indigenous people—Hawaiians—with their fascinating culture, who
have called these islands home for more than 1500 years. Hawaiians now
form only 12% of Hawaii's population due to intermarriage, and sadly,
death from contagious Western diseases following the rediscovery of the
Islands by Captain James Cook in 1778.
Hawaii,
was once a romantic travel destination for the rich and famous during
the steamship era, followed by Pan American's Clipper flying boat days.
Steamships docked at the Aloha Tower, the tallest building in Honolulu
in those days.
Basic Hawaii Information
The
Hawaiian Islands are the most remote islands on earth, so choosing how
to get there will be a priority. Most people these days arrive by air.
It's relatively cheap, definitely fast with direct flights from the
Mainland to Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai. Of course, there are
International flights, mostly into Honolulu, but if you wish to visit a
neighboring island, there are connecting flights to get you there.
Arrival by cruise ship is still possible, though limited, as most
cruises from or to the Mainland are seasonal in nature.
Each
island has its own special charms, with Oahu being the most developed
and a good all-round choice for things to see and do. Maui is more laid
back with many great resorts, fantastic windsurfing and other water
sports. Kauai has the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea
Canyon, and is home of the wettest spot on earth—read, fantastic
flora.
Hawaii, the Big Island, also has great flora, one of the largest cattle
ranches in America and, of course, Kilauea, the world's most active
volcano.
To choose your destination island(s), decide on the following:
- What do you want to see or do?
- How much time do you have?
- Do you wish to drive, or take public transit?
- What mode of travel would you like to use to travel to Hawaii?
- Do you wish to have a multi-island adventure?
- Do you want the hustle of Honolulu and Waikiki, or something more laid back?
- Are you interested in a "typical" vacation or something with more adventure?
- Are you more inclined towards eco tourism?
- Do you wish to stay at a luxurious resort, tourist hotel or bed and breakfast?
- If traveling with your family, what would the kids look forward to seeing and doing
