Thurston Lava Tube, Big Island Hawaii

Thurston Lava Tube

Thurston Lava Tube
Thurston Lava Tube formed about 350-500 years ago. Lava tubes are formed when an active low-viscosity lava flow develops a continuous and hard crust, which thickens and forms a roof above the still flowing lava stream. This lava tube was discovered in 1913 by Lorrin Thurston, a local newspaper publisher. The trail within the tube is 400 feet (120 m) long. It takes only 10 minutes to walk through the tube.
Thurston Lava Tube is an amazing tourist attraction on the Big Island. The Tube is visited by thousands of tourists every year.
