Thurston Lava Tube formed about 350-500
years ago. Lava tubes are formed when an active
low-viscosity lava flow develops a continuous and hard
crust, which thickens and forms a roof above the still
flowing lava stream. This lava tube was discovered in 1913
by Lorrin Thurston, a local newspaper publisher. The trail
within the tube is 400 feet (120 m) long. It takes only 10
minutes to walk through the tube. |
